GMUW Partners with National Letter Carriers In Annual Food Drive
On May 10, 2008, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) conducted its 16th annual one-day Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive across the nation for the benefit of local food shelves. Last year, nearly 1,200 NALC branches collected over 70.7 million pounds of non-perishable foods to distribute to food pantries. The United Way is proud to partner with the NALC each year to make this very important event happen.
In the Green Mountain United Way region, the participating letter carriers were from post offices in Barre, Barton, Canaan, Derby Line, Montpelier, Newport, Northfield, Randolph and Waterbury.
Some of the food shelves that received this year’s donations of food include:- Northeast Kingdom Community Action (Canaan, Derby Line & Newport)
- Orleans Federated Church Food Shelf (Barton)
- Hedding United Methodist Church (Barre)
- St. Monica’s Food Shelf (Barre)
- Montpelier Food Pantry (at Trinity United Methodist Church, Montpelier)
- Community Emergency Relief Volunteers (Northfield)
- Randolph Area Food Shelf (Randolph)
- Waterbury Food Shelf (Waterbury)
Because of the poor economy being experienced across the U.S. and the fact that federal supplies of excess farm goods have dropped, food shelves everywhere are having a very difficult time keeping their shelves stocked. An increasing number of families are now seeking the aid of their local food shelf, as they have to decide which bills to pay first – housing, heating, medical or groceries.
Sincere thanks are extended to all who gave so generously on May 10th to the annual National Association of Letter Carriers food drive.
