4th & 5th Graders at St. Paul’s School, Barton, VT
They watched television with their parents, saw the devastation that the May and August floods
caused throughout Vermont and wanted to help. But how? The 4
th and 5th graders at St. Paul’s School immediately started brainstorming with their teacher and began fundraising through bake
sales and car washes and in a short time had collected over $500. Not long after, a call was made
to the local Green Mountain United Way (GMUW) office in Derby Line to find out where to
send the money they had raised so that it would stay in Vermont to help fellow Vermonters.
Madeleine Roy, Development and Marketing Director for GMUW, met with the students, some
of whom have relatives in central VT who were displaced by the flood, and arranged to send
their donation to the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund established by the United Ways of VT. This
fund is specifically for long term recovery efforts in Vermont. Their total donation of $551.64
will be added to the already-received $1.5 million from all over Vermont to this Relief Fund.
Congratulations to the students at St. Paul’s School for thoughtfulness toward others in need.
