Letter to Editor: Wendy Rea, Campaign Chair

To the Editor:

Back in September I was honored to be named this years Green Mountain United Way campaign chair person. At our kick-off breakfast, I was asked to talk about why I volunteer and why I support the United Way year after year. I stumbled on the question at first, trying to put into words why I volunteer and support GMUW. It was a seemingly easy question until I tried to come up with words to answer it. Then it occurred to me… why not?

As a mother, I want all children to grow up healthy and have access to early learning. As a community member I want to help my neighbors in need, as I am sure they would help me. As a local business person, I want to give back to the community that supports me day in a day out. By supporting GMUW, I can do all of these things and more.

This year has tested GMUW and their ability to meet and support our community needs. They passed the test with flying colors by helping victims of the spring flood and Irene. They coordinated with FEMA and other local organizations to get assistance into Central Vermont where it was so desperately needed. They continue this mission today and will be helping families and organizations affected, for many more months if not years.

However, responding to these types of emergency needs is only one piece of what GMUW does. We still have community members with financial, health and educational needs. The programs and initiatives of GMUW need to continue in order to meet those needs, all year long.

This year I ask that you support the Green Mountain United Way in any way you can. If you have people on your holiday shopping list and you are unsure what to get them.
