After more devastating damage from heavy rains and flooding in August, Green Mountain United Way is playing a critical role in helping people in Central Vermont to acquire the resources they need to overcome the burdens they are facing. Many have lost their homes and possessions and need proper shelter, food and other basic needs for their families.

The Northfield Savings Bank has generously donated $100,000 for disaster relief efforts and has asked GMUW to be the administrative agent for these funds. Funds will be distributed to nonprofit organizations in Washington and Orange counties after their completion of an application process. The funds are to be used for the delivery of basic needs (food, shelter and clothing). Said NSB President, Thomas Pelletier, when presenting the check to Nancy Zorn, Executive Director of GMUW, “This money will be put to immediate use to help Vermonters recover from the ravages of Tropical Storm Irene.”

In addition, GMUW is participating in the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund recently created by the United Ways of Vermont, Vermont Emergency Management and Vermont Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. Contributions to this fund will be used 100% for unmet long term needs of Vermont survivors of Tropical Storm Irene.
